Plan to Burn Hurricane Debris Sparks Health Fears in U.S. Virgin Islands

U.S. Virgin Islands lawmakers have voted to block federal plans to burn trees and brush from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, saying open incineration would exacerbate health disparities in the predominantly black and low-income population and citing environmental justice concerns. Now the decision is in the governor’s hands.
