Trump Wants to Scrap Obama Rule Hiking Penalties for Violating Car Efficiency Rules

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is backtracking on an Obama-era rule that increases penalties for automakers that violate fuel efficiency standards starting with the 2019 model year. The agency proposes scrapping the rule, which would charge automakers $14, instead of the current $5.50, for every tenth of a mile per gallon each vehicle they sell exceeds federal standards.
