Bankrupt Westmoreland Coal Wants Court to Erase Its Obligations to Retirees, Miners

Westmoreland Coal Co. has asked a bankruptcy judge to let it erase its medical and retirement obligations to former workers at a Wyoming mine. It also wants to nix its contract with unionized miners there. Westmoreland lawyers said the obligations, including $70 million in medical benefits, were not acceptable to potential buyers of the Kemmerer mine.
