Scientists have found evidence that frozen methane deposits in the Arctic Ocean—known as the “sleeping giants of the carbon cycle”—have started to release over a large area of the continental slope off the East Siberian coast, the Guardian reports. With 80 times the power to warm the planet than CO2, the deposits have researchers worried that a dangerous feedback loop could be developing.
