From Pope Francis to Greta Thunberg, there are growing calls to make “ecocide”—which literally means “killing the environment”—a recognized crime under international law. If adopted, it would be the fifth crime punishable under the International Criminal Court, which can currently prosecute people for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression.
