Former Bank of England governor Mark Carney’s initiative to grow the voluntary carbon market has been described as “a dangerous distraction” from the urgent need for major polluters to slash carbon emissions.

His Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets launched its first consultation this week, claiming the market needs to grow by a factor of more than 15 in the next decade to keep warming to the Paris Agreement target of 1.5C.
