Often featured in fairytales, the red toadstool mushroom fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is toxic to humans and many animals. However, experts have observed that Japanese squirrels can safely eat ‘poisonous’ Amarita species, suggesting that there is a mutually beneficial relationship between squirrels and these fungi.
