Since 1979, average summer sea ice in the Arctic has declined by more than a third, an area equal to the entire Western U.S. That causes a whole host of problems, including rising seas and altered power balances between countries surrounding the Arctic, says Fran Ulmer, chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.
