An Alaska Village, Threatened by Erosion and Flooding, Begins to Relocate

Newtok’s relocation, necessary due to melting permafrost, sinking tundra and advancing erosion, has been talked about for years. This fall, 137 residents are moving to become the pioneering year-round residents of a new village taking shape on a hillside upriver from where the Ninglick meets the Bering Sea.
