An Ambitious Global Effort to Cut Shipping Emissions Stalls

The International Maritime Organization agreed earlier this year to cut greenhouse gas emissions 50 percent by 2050, but its members are struggling to agree on how to get there. A committee considered a cap on ship speeds and other short-term measures that could reduce emissions before 2023, but none was approved. The IMO did continue to move forward on a potential ban on heavy fuel oil in the Arctic.
