Chevron, Occidental Petroleum and BHP have invested in Carbon Engineering, a start-up developing technology to take carbon out of the atmosphere. Proponents say such “direct air capture” technology could play an important role in arresting climate change. Critics say the cost of capturing and sequestering enough carbon would require trillions of dollars.
