California Invites World Leaders to 2018 Climate Summit

Jerry Brown plans to issue a call Thursday for a global summit on “climate action” to be held in San Francisco in the fall of 2018.

The summit set for 2018 in San Francisco will mark the first time a state is hosting a climate gathering aimed at upholding the goals of the Paris climate agreement, an worldwide pact to fight global warming that President Donald Trump is exiting.

“We take note of the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from the Paris Agreement“, reads the final communique from the two-day meeting. “We in California and in states all across America believe it’s time to act”.

The focus of the Summit, however, remained the issue of climate change as the U.S. was isolated with the other 19 member states strongly backing the Paris accord.

She said the USA position was “regrettable” but that the summit had achieved “good results in some areas”, and cited a hard-won agreement on trade that does include Mr Trump and the United States.

World powers lined up against US President Donald Trump on climate change, reaffirming their support for worldwide efforts to fight global warming.

With the final statement nearly nailed down, the summit marked a diplomatic success for Chancellor Angela Merkel as she finessed differences with U.S. President Donald Trump, who arrived at the two-day summit isolated on a host of issues.

Mrs May was the first leader through the doors of the White House after Mr Trump became president and he predicted they would have a “fantastic” relationship.

“The Trump administration’s announcement undermines a key pillar in the fight against climate change and damages the world’s ability to avoid the most risky and costly effects of climate change”.

What is clear, however, is that California has shown no sign of backing down.

“Therefore, after this step taken by the United States, our position steers a course towards not passing this from the parliament”, he said.

The Governor spoke via video message during the final hour of the Global Citizen Festival in Hamburg, Germany and was introduced by Christiana Figueres, former United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary and now the convener of Mission 2020 and Global Ambassador for the Under2 Coalition. It will feature big-name music acts like Coldplay and Shakira, as well as leaders like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri.

“We want to tackle this existential challenge and we can’t and we won’t wait until the last person on earth is convinced of the scientific basis for climate change”, Merkel said in a speech on June 29. It will be a part of a larger effort around the globe to recruit and lobby governments and municipalities of all sizes to make good on pledges to fight climate change.

“Climate change is directly impacting Alameda County citizens through sea level rise, flooding, increased wildfires, drought, spread of vector-borne diseases and air pollution harming the public health”, the resolution reads.

Brown has routinely signed global climate agreements throughout his fourth and final term and committed the state to generating half its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The Paris Agreement includes almost every country in the world and it is essential that global backing for it continues.
