A detailed analysis of 39 US fisheries shows that catch share programs slow the ‘race to fish,’ reducing costs and occupational hazards for fishermen, improving product quality, and allowing fishers to better time their catches to market demand. By demonstrating these results in 39 different fisheries, the new finding can inform the current debate over expanding the use of catch shares in other fisheries worldwide.
