Eamon Ryan TD pays tribute to Steven Agnew MLA as he steps down as GPNI Leader

Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan TD has this morning paid tribute to Steven Agnew MLA, following the announcement that he is to stand down as Leader of the Green Party in Northern Ireland in the Autumn.

Speaking today, Deputy Ryan said: “We have been privileged to work with Steven over the last eight years. The dedication and skill he brought to his role as Leader of the Green Party in Northern Ireland were a source of inspiration to us all. We wish him all the very best as he steps down as Leader, and look forward to working closely with his successor.

“We are glad that Steven has decided to stay on as an MLA, and we hope that the anger and frustration he expressed about the ongoing sabotage of the elected Assembly will shame others into taking steps towards its restoration.

“The energy, commitment and calm Steven showed through all the elections of recent years were a testament to his character and leadership.

“Personally, I am most grateful for the friendship and support Steven showed me as we continued to operate our all-island party in our own unique and collaborative way.

“Those same qualities are reflected in his decision to step down. I am glad he will be able to spend more time with his children and hope that once a democratic forum is returned we will hear Steven’s, and the Greens’, voice louder and clearer than ever.”
