'GreenVillage' declaration for Namatakula

Update: 3:08PM STUDENTS from the Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS) at the University of Fiji (UniFiji) collaborated with youths of Namatakula village to declare the community a ‘Green Village’ last week.

This was after students conducted studies on Komave village and the Vusu tribe (Namatakula) ‘iqoliqoli’  last year and found the depletion of corals reefs and washing away of foreshores which could have a direct effect on the marine habitat.

The students had also found the presence of all forms of wastes along the fore shores.

The cleanup event involved replanting of indigenous plants at the beach, rubbish collection around the village and community awareness on environmental concerns.

Associate Professor and Director of CIS Dr Litiana Kuridrani said  the campaign helped the iTaukei students to integrate indigenous knowledge and traditional coping mechanisms of climate change adaptation by means of replanting, documentation of preservation and conservation methods in the iTaukei context.
