Coral reefs in the Indian Ocean surrounding the Seychelles are struggling to stay alive: 90 percent of them were lost in 1998 from a bleaching event, and more in 2016. The island’s government swapped part of its sovereign debt for investment in marine protection areas, which has led to several restoration projects.
