Major Covid-Related Emissions Drop Still ‘No Cause for Cheer’

Greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. fell 18 percent below last year’s level in the three months ending June 15, reflecting an economy sharply hobbled by the Covid-19 pandemic, which should be “no cause for cheer,” a new report warns. The transportation sector led the drop, it found, with the sector’s emissions reduced by 28 percent compared to 2019.
