Minister Pippa Hackett invites Animal Welfare Organisations to Apply for Funding

This week Minister of State for Land Use & Biodiversity, Pippa Hackett, has invited animal welfare charities to apply for funding through the Animal Welfare Grant Programme.

“Last December we allocated €3.2 million to 101 animal welfare organisations around the country and I would like to see these organisations continue with their good work. Supporting those who work directly to protect and rescue animals is one of the best ways to ensure their welfare and I would encourage any eligible charities to apply for funding,” Minister Hackett commented.

Animal welfare – is an issue which has always been at the heart of Green Party policy. In our 2020 election manifesto, we outlined a number of key policies which would help to protect animals in Ireland and improve their treatment in a tangible way, including – a significant increase in funding for animal welfare organisations. There has been progress on many of the policies outlined in both the Green Party manifesto and the Programme for Government, including a historic ban on fur farming just last month.

Minister Hackett has been working closely with Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, on this issue among others. In February 2021, Minister McConalogue launched Ireland’s first Animal Welfare Strategy 2021-2025. The Strategy takes a ‘One Health, One Welfare’ approach, recognising the inter-relationship between human wellbeing and animal welfare for the benefit of both animals and society. The Strategy also prioritises education and knowledge transfer to improve animal welfare.

Further details, including Application Form, are available at: gov.ie – Animal Welfare (www.gov.ie)

The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is 23rd July 2021.
