Montana’s trees have flipped from being a carbon “sink” to a carbon emitter in roughly the past decade. Outbreaks of bark beetles, fueled by warming temperatures, have ravaged forests, leaving carbon-rich trees to die and slowly decompose or burn in forest fires.
