Plastic Plant Planning Decision a Huge Step in the Wrong Direction

The Green Party has reacted with disappointment to a decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant planning permission for a plastic factory in Skibbereen, Co. Cork. Local residents have expressed concern over the potential environmental impact of the facility, both in terms of emissions and the possibility of chemical runoff entering the town’s sewage treatment system.

Green Party Spokesperson for Environmental Protection, Senator Grace O’Sullivan: “We’re deeply disappointed by this decision. At a time when we should be moving away from plastics this represents a huge step in the wrong direction. Recent fires at plastic factories in France, India, and the United States, and accidental leaks of materials in Ireland and the UK have shown the effects such factories can have on the areas around them, and we share the concerns of local campaigners. There needs to be a comprehensive environmental impact assessment to determine what the effects will be in terms of air and water quality.”
