Premature Birth Rates Drop in California After Coal and Oil Plants Shut Down

Shutting down power plants that burn fossil fuel leads almost immediately to a reduction in premature birth in women living nearby, a new study says. Researchers looked at records of more than 57,000 births by mothers who lived near eight coal- and oil-fired power plants in California the year before the plants were shut down, and then the year after.
