Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama opened the UN Oceans Conference today is calling to act now to reverse the damage done to our seas.

“Let us send a clear message to the whole world, that time is running out to save our seas and oceans. Just as it is running out to decisively tackle the fundamental causes of climate change.”

The PM noting that while there is global support to save our seas trickling in, more is needed

“The registration on our online portal of more than 600 voluntary commitments to date is very encouraging – governments, civil society organisations, intergovernmental bodies, the private sector and individuals coming together in a concerted effort to address this crisis.”

President of the UN General Assembly and Fiji’s permanent representative to the UN, Peter Thomson, says the conference will provide options going forward.

“We will be hearing from the best of global authorities on what the real problems of the ocean are, what the truth is in all these areas that I’ve mentioned, the pollution and fish stocks and governance and we’ll also be having the best of global authorities to give us the solutions, the work plan for what we are do ahead to fix those woes.”

The one week conference will aim to secure voluntary commitments from the countries involved much like the 2015 Paris accord.
