WITH the Top Executives (TOPEX) Conference commencing today, the event will focus on the overarching theme of “Responsible Businesses in a Green Economy”.
This is in line with the country’s focus on climate change and with Fiji’s important presidency role at the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP23) in Bonn, Germany this November.
According to the organisers of the two-day event, Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF), there was a need to follow suit and get behind Government’s efforts on climate change.
FCEF president Himen Chandra said for businesses, the adverse effects of climate change were becoming real and there was need to explore mitigation and adaptation strategies in order to remain viable.
“Climate change has been an issue of concern the challenges of climate change is dawning upon us with a much greater impact,” he said.
“This in mind, I believe all delegates present this year will agree that the private sector will now rather than later have to rise to the challenges of ensuring a brighter future for our nation.
“It is a recognised fact that the changing climatic conditions and weather patterns that have brought devastating floods, cyclones and rising sea level are causing and will further cause serious negative impacts to our economy and our environment one way or another, the challenge lies before us to ensure the growth of a nation both economically and environmentally sustainable.”
The conference is held at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa in Sigatoka.
