What Houston doesn't need: Sniping between mayor and governor over Harvey funds.

After weeks of solidarity among leaders in Texas and Houston to help victims of Hurricane Harvey, what a pity to see sniping break out now.

Democratic Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner wrote the Republican governor early this week seeking money from the state’s rainy day fund. And he blamed the lack of incoming cash from the state for his push to raise property taxes in Houston.

Abbott shot back the next day that $100 million in state funding had already been granted — plus an accelerated reimbursement plan. “The mayor seems to be using this as hostage to raise taxes,” he said.

Is this a fiscal disagreement? Partisan squabbling? A simple misunderstanding? They need to figure it out — residents need help, not soundbites.
