Consumers Energy says it will stop using coal to generate electricity by 2040. The utility company outlined the plan in a filing with Michigan regulators. It plans to reach 43 percent renewable energy by 2040 and expects electricity demand to drop by more than a fifth through improvements in demand response, efficiency and the power grid.
