Ocean heat waves are not only damaging Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, they are harming its ability to recover. A new study in the journal Nature warns of “widespread ecological collapse” based on an examination of the corals that survived several heatwaves. The authors found that these corals created new corals as a drastically lower rate than before.
