An Taisce has made a submission to Limerick City and County Council on the current planning application for an extended rock quarry involving blasting, at the Aughinish Alumina plant near Foynes Co Limerick.
The proposal is to extend the quarrying of rock for the perimeter containment of increased waste bauxite residue on the site. The proposed quarry site is in close proximity to the bauxite waste deposition site.
Ian Lumley, An Taisce Advocacy Officer stated
“An increase in high rainfall events projected by climate change modelling, means that occurrences like the recent Donegal floods will become more frequent and more severe.
This requires a review of the current and continuing management of the large bauxite residue deposition site at Aughinish Alumina, to ensure the adequacy of the perimeter protection of the site. It needs to be demonstrated that any future high rainfall events particularly in combination with Atlantic storm and tidal surges, does not pose risk of any containment breach of bauxite waste from the site, which would contaminate the Shannon Estuary”
