SDGs Monitoring Report critical of Ireland on waste, climate, ocean protection & global partnership targets
The Green Party said today that the evidence of the Government’s environmental failures is mounting, after yet another international report criticised Government lack of action in this area.
The Sustainable Development Goals Index and Dashboards Report, published today, shows Ireland doing well on some of the social goals but failing badly when it comes to action on waste, climate, ocean protection and global partnership. It is the first worldwide study to assess where each country stands with regard to achieving the SDGs.
Speaking in response to the report, Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan TD said the evidence is mounting against the Government’s record on environmental issues.
“This is the latest in a number of damning reports on Ireland’s record on environmental issues. Fine Gael have utterly failed in this area, and continue to stick to their old development model. Just last week the Government passed the damaging Heritage Bill, which threatens Irish wildlife. At the same time they are attempting to block a range of opposition bills that would help restore our environmental reputation.
“The Government is full of praise for their the new National Development Plan, Project Ireland 2040, but the reality is that they are continuing on the same unsustainable development path. We should be switching to a new economic model where looking after our environmental also helps us build stronger local communities. Fine Gael do not understand that looking after the environment can be good for our economy. They are the laggards who are damaging our international reputation.  We need a new national plan that takes sustainability seriously and the Green Party will be working constructively in the Dáil to try to deliver such an alternative plan for the future.”
