Minnesota’s High Court Won’t Block ‘Necessity Defense’ by Pipeline Protesters

Climate change protesters will be able to use an unusual “necessity defense” against charges stemming from attempts to temporarily shut down oil pipelines. The Minnesota Supreme Court declined to review a lower-court ruling on the issue, meaning defendants will be able to argue at trial that the immediate threat of climate change justified their actions.
