What’s On during Biodiversity Week: Thursday 25th & Friday 26th May

Sun’s out! Get outdoors and make the most of this warm weather by taking part in one of Biodiversity Week’s events today, Thursday 25th, or tomorrow, Friday 26th May. There is no shortage of excuses to get the suncream on and take advantage of some of the free activities celebrating Ireland’s wildlife and natural habitats! Check out what on near you below:


Butterfly Monitoring Course

Tomás Murray of the National Biodiversity Data Centre will introduce the biology and the species of Irish bumblebees and butterflies, and provide training on how to monitor both groups of pollinators according to international standards. You’ll also get to spend a few hours in the field honing your identification skills for both groups and practice the necessary skills to become a recorder for the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s butterfly and bumblebee monitoring schemes.

Hedgerow & Native Woodland Walk

Join us on the Ballyconnell Loop Walk to explore Annagh Wood, the finest and most extensive area of woodland along the Shannon-Erne Waterway, and discover the area’s biodiversity along the way. The woodland consists principally of Ash and Hazel together with Oak, Elm and Rowan while the undergrowth consists of Holly, Blackthorn and Bramble, with a rich ground flora.

BATLAS 2020 Bat Detector Training

BATLAS 2020 is an all-Ireland bat distribution survey of Ireland’s four common bat species. Between 2016-2018, BCIreland hope to map every 10km square across the island in relation to the present/absence of common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, Leisler’s bat and Daubenton’s bat. Volunteers are being sought to help us with this endeavour.
