Alaska Tribes Petition to Preserve Tongass National Forest Roadless Protections

More than half of Tongass National Forest’s 16.7 million acres are protected under a rule that prohibits road building and commercial logging in many U.S. forests. Now the Department of Agriculture is proposing to lift that rule in Tongass, and Native tribes are speaking out. Last week, nine Alaska tribes submitted a petition to the USDA opposing the proposal, saying the forest is vital to their livelihoods.
